Quiet Naples fights noise pollution

As more people move to Southwest Florida, it means more cars, more planes – and more noise. Now a new group has formed with the sole aim of reducing the bat and increasing the quality of life.

Mary Tatigian, a nurse in Naples, had had enough of the constant hum and the cars and planes she heard at her home in the Golden Gate Estates.

In March, Tatigian founded QuietCollier.org, a group whose mission is to work with local officials to reduce noise pollution. Both the Centers for Disease Control and the Environmental Protection Agency classify noise pollution as a health risk.

Besides, said Tatigian, it’s just plain annoying.

“Our rest has been stolen and we want it back,” said Tatigian. “We want to work with local government officials to bring calmness back to our neighborhoods. We are flooded. At home we can hear air and vehicle traffic.

“There is no rest. You should be able to come home relaxed and recover. “

Naples Airport officials admit there is a problem, but it’s one they are addressing. The airport is currently in the middle of a $ 1.7 million noise study that began last year due to community complaints.

Quiet Collier has asked Collier County officials to put up noise barriers on roads. The group also wants the police to enforce an existing state law that restricts the volume of vehicles.

In order to reduce the noise pollution in the sky, aircraft can increase their flight altitudes or flight patterns can be adjusted. Naples Airport requests pilots not to take off or land between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM, however a flight ban is mandatory which means the airport cannot pay fines for violations.

Naples Airport Authority says it has no control over how many planes come and go and how high they fly. These decisions are handled by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The best airport officials can do is make recommendations to the FAA based on their noise study, which is expected to be completed by the end of next year.
