The Superintendent of Leon County Schools (LCS), Rocky Hanna, announced that this Thursday the 2nd as well as the Bill of Rights of Florida Parents.

This meeting comes after Hanna converted the summer mask ban policy into a mask mandate for Leon County Schools for grades K-8. The controversial change created tension between board members, parents and teachers / staff during the board meeting on August 24th. In addition, the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) sent a letter to Hanna and the board members threatening to withhold her salary for failing to comply with a decision by Governor Ron DeSantis that banned counties from requiring masks.

Then, last Friday, District Judge John Cooper ruled that the DeSantis ban was a breach of authority after the governor was sued by parents in six Florida counties who argued that the governor’s executive order was unconstitutional.

As of now, Grade K-8 students are required to wear a mask unless the child has a medical opt-out form signed by a licensed doctor or psychologist. On Friday, the high school principals sent an email informing parents that they too will be enforcing the district’s mask policy starting this week. However, a high school student may refuse to wear a mask with a signed form from their parents, and not a doctor.

There are currently 1,242 students in quarantine and 442 positive COVID-19 cases across the district. For a full list of Leon County Schools and the positivity rate, please visit the LCS website.
