NYSEG completes Gainesville upgrade | Local news

GAINESVILLE – A number of electrical upgrades have been completed in the village, New York State Electric & Gas officials announced Thursday.

The circuit upgrade will benefit more than 400 customers, NYSEG officials said in a press release. The project upgraded sections of the Gainesville 594 circuit that provides power to customers’ homes and businesses to improve reliability and resilience.

“Our primary role as a utility company is to provide safe and reliable service to our customers year round,” said Michelle McDonald, manager of resilience field projects at NYSEG. “This is an important responsibility, and it requires continued investment in our systems like those made here in Gainesville. With these upgrades, our customers can rely on a more reliable service. “

The main goal of the project was to make the network more reliable by increasing the efficiency of the circuit. The existing voltage was changed from 4.8 kilovolts to 34.5 kV.

It also connected to RG & E’s 7704 circuit, which was also recently upgraded. The new connection adds a secondary source of power supply, which results in increased reliability as customers can get their power through a different route when the primary circuit needs to be repaired.

The project also upgraded the circuit’s equipment, including the addition of new voltage regulators and transformers. NYSEG also installed a SCADA switch that allows remotely switching which circuit is powering a customer’s home or business for faster recovery times.

The project was part of NYSEG’s Resiliency Program, which is proactively hardening the company’s systems to continue to provide safe and reliable service to all customers. Work began last January and has modernized more than five kilometers of the infrastructure.

In total, the upgraded NYSEG Gainesville 594 route and the upgraded RG&E 7704 route serve more than 1,200 customers

Before construction began, NYSEG also performed an improved tree pruning along the power lines, which included trimming from the ground to the sky and removing overhanging branches to create higher headroom. The work will help protect the infrastructure in the winter months, when snow and ice can pollute the vegetation and come into contact with power lines.

NYSEG is a subsidiary of AVANGRID Inc.
