Miami-Dade bus drivers are dying from COVID-19 at an alarming rate

MIAMI – Miami-Dade County’s veteran bus driver Tim Jones lost his two-week battle with COVID-19 on Monday morning after never meeting his newborn.

Jones had been waiting for full FDA approval to get vaccinated, but when that came last week it was too late for him.

His death is the latest in a constant drop of devastating news on the union hall.

“We’re losing about seven employees a week to COVID,” said Phyllis LeFlore, President of AFSCME Local 1184. “Now everyone’s getting scared. That’s all I hear this morning. That we are afraid. “

LeFlore spoke about a bus attendant who had also lost his battle with the virus and a 30-year-old bus driver who died on the first day of school last week.

With a bus station prayer vigil held for a driver who died of COVID in February, numbing numbers are rising, reflecting the nationwide crisis.

“I was told many of them were unvaccinated,” said LeFlore. “We have so many unvaccinated people and I asked them why and I really can’t get an answer.”

LeFlore said she was not in favor of making vaccines mandatory, but the union was working on a program to promote them.
