NS. PETERSBURG, Florida – Red Sox pitcher Martin Pérez tested positive for COVID-19.
“We found out not long ago,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora here at Tropicana Field on Monday. “So we go through the process, through protocol, close contact, people being tested, and everything else.”
Pérez, who started the season as a starter but has been training at the Boston Bullpen for the past few weeks, is the third player on the road trip and the fourth person to travel with the team to test positive.
Kiké Hernández tested positive on Friday. Christian Arroyo and Red Sox strength and conditioning trainer Kiyoshi Momose tested positive on Sunday.
“We have to be patient,” said Cora when asked about squad shifts. “There’s a taxi crew here. They need to be tested. We have to go through a lot and then we decide who to add. “
Connor Wong, Jack Lopez, Raynel Espinal, Phillips Valdez and John Schreiber are on the taxi team here.
Reliever Ryan Brasier strengthens the team in St. Petersburg. He could join the squad this week but he’s not a candidate for Pérez’s place today.
“He’ll do his job and then we’ll decide what to do with him next,” said Cora.
Boston opens a series of four games against the Rays at 7:10 pm on Monday
The Red Sox obviously need starter Nick Pivetta to go deep on Monday. The bullpen is already taxed and now without Pérez.
“It’s important. We know where we stand in relation to Bullpen,” said Cora. ”Of course it’s not perfect to get into this series. But at the same time we’re here.”
