Umbrella helps MPs identify Naples wallet thief

Umbrella helps MPs identify Naples wallet thief

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. – A South Fort Myers woman is charged with theft of theft of a Louis Vuitton wallet from a shopper at Seed To Table in Naples, officials said.

Debra Marconis, 58, allegedly took a designer bag that was left on a chair and stuffed it into her own purse, Collier County Sheriff’s Office MPs said. Then she emptied the contents of the bag and threw it into a shopping cart before leaving the scene.

The owner of the bag found the contents using Find My iPhone, but discovered that her purse had been stolen. The victim then called the police and filed a complaint.

Marconis fled the scene in a gray Volkswagen Jetta, but the detectives couldn’t see a full license plate because of the rain.

A CCSO officer recognized the umbrella Marconis was carrying in the surveillance footage. It was an umbrella from the Village Shops on Venetian Bay.

Security footage from Venetian Bay showed the Jetta exiting the area, giving MPs a full license plate.

When MPs found out in surveillance footage that Marconis owned the car, they showed up at her home where she confessed to stealing the handbag, MPs said. The woman gave the stolen bag to the MPs and she made an appointment to hand it over to herself.

Marconis met with a deputy at the Naples Prison Center on Sunday 29 August and was sent to prison. She is facing charges of theft, the MPs said.
