Arozarena HR in 8th place, Tampa Bay Rays continue pecking after Orioles

BALTIMORE, Md. – Randy Arozarena hit the green light with two runs in the eighth inning and the Tampa Bays Rays continued their dominance over the Baltimore Orioles with a 4-3 win on Saturday night.

The AL East leaders improved to 17-1 against the Orioles that year, including 10 comeback wins. The Rays have beaten Baltimore 11 straight times.

“We did a good job coming back late,” said Rays manager Kevin Cash. “We did a good job adding runs late in the games. You can tell that the guys in the dugout are sticking to their mentality.”

The Rays outscored the Orioles in the seventh inning or later with 51-12 and 38-6 at Camden yards.

Reliever JT Chargois (4-0) took a goalless seventh place and Andrew Kittredge took his fourth save.

Tampa Bay starter Michael Wacha allowed Pedro Severino a lead-off double and went into fifth place as No. 9 hitter Kelvin Gutierrez, which ended his night. Reliever Adam Conley met Cedric Mullins to load the bases and a sacrificial flight from Ryan Mountcastle gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead.

Left-handed John Means was one of Baltimore’s most reliable starters. He was dominant before allowing Yandy Diaz a single and Brandon Lowe a double, which ended him in seventh place with an out.

“I need to be able to close the door this seventh inning, especially after scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning,” said Means. “This shutdown inning is so important and I just couldn’t get the job done.”

Dillon Tate stepped in, allowing an RBI grounder from Austin Meadows and a run scoring double on Joey Wendle, reducing the lead to 3-2.

“Because of the way our squad is structured, we often get good matchups late in the games,” said Wendle. “We all have a lot of trust in one another.”

TRAINER ROOM

Rays: OF Jordan Luplow Luplow (left ankle strain) has been reinstated by the IL. “It’s nice to have your left-handed pitching club,” said Cash. In a corresponding move, RHP Chris Mazza, who started the last three innings for his first save on Friday night, became optional at Triple-A Durham. Mazza gave up only one run in his three appearances in 6 1/3 innings.

Orioles: LHP Bruce Zimmermann is still suffering from an ankle injury and could only get a start or two for the remainder of the season, manager Brandon Hyde said.

Rays: RHP Chris Archer (0-1, 4.26 ERA) says he is perfectly healthy after leaving the second inning with a hip problem on his last start against the Yankees on Sunday. It was Archer’s first appearance in the majors since April 10, after falling out with a forearm injury.

Orioles: RHP Spenser Watkins (2-6, 7/7 ERA) has allowed 30 runs and 42 hits in his last six starts – a 7/7 ERA in 25 ⅔ innings.
