Correctional officer trainee dies after accidentally firing a gun

A Florida Justice Department trainee died on duty, according to a Facebook post shared on the FDC Saturday afternoon.

Whitney Cloud began her public safety career in late June.

Cloud was assigned to the Jefferson Correctional Institution and was enrolled in the Harry K. Singletary Training Academy at the Wakulla Correctional Institution in Crawfordville.

She was injured by an accidental shot during firearms training on Thursday.

Cloud was transported to a nearby hospital where she later died.

No other employees were involved in the accident.

“We are absolutely devastated by the loss of Officer Whitney Cloud,” said Secretary of State Mark Inch.

“As a newly hired officer candidate, Officer Cloud vowed to improve the lives of others and protect their communities,” Inch said. “We are deeply saddened by this unexpected tragedy. Our sincere condolences go to her relatives and her colleagues at this extremely difficult time. “
