Friends, family, law enforcement and first responders paid their respects to police officer Edward Perez at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Miami Beach on Saturday.
Perez, 55, was a 25-year veteran in the Miami Beach Police Department. He leaves behind his wife and daughter.
Officer Perez died as a result of COVID-19.
“This is a farewell to a beloved officer, father, husband, and just one pillar in the community. Someone who helped keep the streets of Miami Beach safe, ”said Richard Clements, Miami Beach Police Chief.
Officer Perez is one of five South Florida law enforcement officers who died of COVID-19 in just ten days.
“If all of our officers had Eddie’s heart, drive and desire, we would be the perfect police force,” said Clements.
In just over a week, South Florida first responders lost four other officers.
Coral Springs Police Sergeant Patrick “Pat” Madison, a decorated 15-year-old member of the Coral Springs Police Department, died on August 20.
Fort Lauderdale policewoman Jennifer Sepot contracted COVID-19 and died on August 14 of complications related to the virus. She was only 27 years old.
West Palm Beach official Robert Williams died on August 16 after contracting the virus and experiencing complications.
Florida Highway Patrol soldier Lazaro Febles died on August 14th.
