City program offers citizens a look behind the scenes of services

A socially distant audience listens as City Commissioner Curtis Richardson speaks during the Tallahassee City Commission reorganization ceremony at City Hall on November 16, 2020. At the completion of the Neighborhood Leadership Academy, graduates receive a certificate of completion and are officially recognized by Tallahassee City Commission prior to graduation.

The city of Tallahassee is offering the Neighborhood Leadership Academy (NLA) 2021 to provide citizens with the knowledge, resources, and networking skills to be effective neighborhood leaders and informed residents. This popular program will take place again this fall.

Organized by the city’s neighborhood affairs department, the 2021 academy begins Tuesday 14 September and continues every Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for 10 weeks. The sessions take place both virtually and in person at different locations. Activities include guided tours of the city’s facilities, active demonstrations, hands-on sessions, and multimedia presentations.

Registration is open. Citizens interested in participating can submit an application online at Talgov.com/NLA. Registration is limited and ends on August 20th.

The Academy is an educational and interactive forum that gives citizens specific knowledge about how their local government works. Residents have the opportunity to connect with community leaders to improve their understanding of city programs and processes while promoting government transparency and civic engagement.

The first session of the academy introduces the participants to the organizational structure of the city. The following sessions cover topics such as economic development, public safety and community engagement.

At the end of the program, graduates receive a certificate of completion and are formally recognized by the Tallahassee City Commission. They can then use what they learned from the academy to influence transformative changes in their communities.
