Leon County’s hospitals have a total of 74 COVID-19 patients, according to local officials, up from 16 hospital stays since Friday.

Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare reported that 38 inpatients were positive for the virus, an increase of eight since Friday. This is the highest number of patients TMH has seen so far in 2021, said spokeswoman Danielle Buchanan.

Of the 38 COVID positive patients at TMH, Buchanan confirmed that only four are vaccinated.

The Capital Regional Medical Center reported that 36 inpatients were being treated for the virus, also eight more than on Friday.

According to data from the Florida Department of Health, approximately 51% of eligible people in Leon County have been vaccinated against COVID-19. New cases positivity was 14.7% last week, with 842 more people testing positive between July 16 and July 22.

Across Florida, 6% of COVID-19 cases were in vaccinated people – also known as “breakthrough cases,” said DOH-Leon spokeswoman Pam Saulsby.

Sauslby also confirmed that most hospitalizations are unvaccinated and are between 20 and 69 years old.

“We recognize that because we have been so successful in vaccinating seniors,” Saulsby said, hospital admissions have shifted to a younger population. “Here, too, we need to continue this step to increase vaccination rates in all eligible age groups.”
