Sandy Alcantara hit six strong innings, Garrett Cooper homered and drove in two runs, and the Miami Marlins beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 on Saturday.
The day after Pablo López, who met Ronald Acuña Jr. on his first pitch, was kicked out, things were calm. The Marlins received huge support from Alcantara, who saved the bullpen from extra work a day after Miami had to use five relievers to cover nine innings.
“It starts with Sandy,” said Marlins manager Don Mattingly. “He threw a few throws early, but getting six was huge for us. Obviously our pen was a bit empty.”
Alcantara (5-7) went the first two thugs he faced and dumped two free passes in the third but did not allow a hit until Ozzie Albies singled out Albies with two outs in the third. He gave up an undeserved run and five hits with four walks and four strikeouts and improved to 2-0 with a 2.68 ERA in six career starts against Atlanta.
Alcantara’s fastball hovered at 100 mph during his stay on the hill.
“I was angry today because something happened to López last night,” said Alcantara. “I just wanted to attack her. We know they are a really aggressive team and I have to use my fastball with Velo and you saw it. “
Yimi Garcia earned his 13th save in 16 chances after facing four thugs in game nine. He got the pub brawler Pablo Sandoval to show up and hit Acuña before Freddie Freeman was singled out. Albies stood to end it.
In the third round, the Marlins led 2-0. Jon Berti went single, went ahead with a sacrificial motley, and hit Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s single right. Chisholm advanced on Starling Marte’s walk and scored a goal on Cooper’s single.
Cooper started sixth with his seventh homer, taking rookie starter Kyle Muller deep into right field making it 3-1.
“I tried to ambush him, honestly,” said Cooper. “I was looking for a fastball for first place. … I just put a good swing on it and luckily it got out of here. I don’t know if that would be possible.” But I went out in Miami. “
Atlanta reduced the lead to 2-1 in the fifth game. Acuña reached Berti on a field mistake from third baseman, moved up to third on Freeman’s single and scored 59 RBIs on a single from Albies, the NL leader.
The Braves, who scored just two goals in the 1-0 win on Friday, scraped 3-2 in the seventh run. A two-base fielding mistake by Miami’s left-field player Jesús Sanchez allowed pinch-hitter Ehire Adrianza to reach. Adrianza advanced on a wild pitch from Dylan Floro and hit Freeman’s single. Floro stranded two runners to avoid further trouble.
Muller (1-2), who faced the Marlins for the first time, gave up four hits and three runs with four walks and seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
“He never gave in,” said Braves manager Brian Snitker. “I love the way he competed. That was very impressive, I think for a young man … he got a little bit of adversity and he held out and kept the game at bay.” . “
NL Ost three-time defending champion Braves, aged 40-42, attempted to hit .500 for the first time since June 8 and for the sixth time this season. Atlanta, who won 10 out of 16, has yet to beat .500 this season.
Miami, last in the division, had lost three out of four.
COMES ON
Since he only threw one litter on Friday, López will face the Los Angeles Dodgers early next week. Coach Don Mattingly wasn’t sure which day López would leave.
LOOK BACK
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, López was the first thrower to throw a throw and suffer a loss since Baltimore Art Schallok did so on August 3, 1955 against the Kansas City Athletics.
TRADE
Miami acquired RHP David Hess as part of a deal with Tampa Bay that received RHP Justin Sterner and cash payments. Jordan Holloway received an option for Triple-A Jacksonville.
NEXT
Veteran RHP Charlie Morton (7-3, 3.74 ERA) will face Miami RHP Zach Thompson (2-2, 1.50) in Sunday’s series finale. 37-year-old Morton is 0-1 with an 8.20 ERA in two starts against the Marlins this year. Thompson is facing the Braves for the second time in his career. He beat Atlanta on June 12 with five scoreless innings.
