Cape Coral Bait Store commends state for tax-free vacation, Freedom Week

CAPE CORAL, Florida – Thursday marks the first day of Freedom Week, a seven-day tax-free holiday aimed at getting people outside and supporting local businesses.

Freedom Week is a holiday that you may have heard of. It started with discounts on school supplies and hurricane items.

These items still qualify for the discount, but the new additions give Southwest Florida a fun twist.

“We have a button there that we can use to add and deduct sales tax. So we just take it off and everything that is called has a flat fee, ”said Jonathan Black, owner of Crazy Lure Bait and Tackle.

The state has stated that the goal of Freedom Week is to stimulate our economy as Florida continues to recover from the pandemic.

For the next seven days, shoppers purchasing general outdoor supplies, including fishing gear, will not be required to pay sales tax if the price stays below a certain dollar amount.

• first $ 5: bait or fishing tackle
• the first $ 30: grab boxes or bags
• first $ 75: rods and reels

That means customers pay no sales tax on the first $ 5 on bait or tackle, no sales tax on the first $ 30 on tackle boxes or bags, and tax-free on the first $ 75 on rods and reels.

Black says it is incentives like these that show Florida is committed to helping businesses recover from the pandemic.

“The state of Florida did a very good job throughout the entire COVID situation, from start to finish. There are several programs that we can take advantage of and this is just another one where the state says, Hey, we’re going to give you a little incentive here to help you greet consumers and how we’re going through that ” , he said.

Freedom Week gives other companies a leg up too.

Unlike fishing equipment, entry to concerts, state parks, and museums is completely tax-free.

Events can take place anytime through December 31, 2021, but must be purchased that week to receive the tax discount.
