LEE CO. The Florida Highway Patrol would like to remind drivers in Southwest Florida not to drink and drive.
Starting at 6 p.m. tonight, FHP soldiers will set up DUI checkpoints in Counties Lee, Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades. The checkpoints will run until 4 a.m. tomorrow.
One reason FHP does this on the weekend of July 4th is to prevent drunk driving accidents. From 2015 to 2019, there were 1,339 deaths from car accidents on the weekend of July 4th, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 38% of these drivers were drunk.
The NHTSA would like to remind you that even a blood alcohol concentration of .02 can affect your ability to drive.
