Regional Chancellor Martin Tadlock announced Thursday that he is negotiating with the USF administration to potentially extend his role into next year.
Speaking on campus stability, enrollment and budget issues at the first-ever personal campus community forum in over a year, Tadlock told those in attendance that he could hold his current position beyond December 31 to help find candidates helping for multiple university positions.
“President Currall has asked me to extend my term as regional chancellor to June 30, 2022 to allow for a national search for a new regional chancellor and vice-chancellor for academic affairs,” said Tadlock. “I’m working with him on the details of this agreement.”
Speaking to The Crow’s Nest, Tadlock confirmed that the expansion is still being considered and is not yet complete.
“It’s not a closed deal. It’s a constant conversation. There are also many personal and family considerations, ”he said. “Then my job is to make sure that this campus is in a good place. That is definitely a concern. So I’m thinking of staying until the end of June to support that. ”
President Steve Currall unexpectedly announced his resignation on Monday, effective August 2nd. He cited health and family as reasons for his resignation. His two-year term as president will be the shortest in the university’s history.
Tadlock said he was “as surprised as anyone” by the resignation and that he had “received the same announcement as everyone else”.
It did not surprise him, however, that Currall asked him to extend his role as regional chancellor of the St. Petersburg campus.
Currall reached out to Tadlock after announcing his departure plans earlier this week.
“We actually mentioned that as a possibility a few months ago,” said Tadlock.
He expects the negotiations to be completed before Currall leaves.
“He’s president until August 2nd,” said Tadlock. “I would think anything we can ultimately achieve in terms of a possible extension will be done by then.”
Tadlock announced in January that he would step down from his position on December 31 and return to teaching at the college of education. He initially refused a one-year extension from July 2020 to July 2021 and instead opted for a six-month extension to give the university time to look for a successor.
He has been recognized by faculty and students for his level-headed approach to university challenges such as consolidation and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Tadlock sees university job searches as critical to maintaining campus stability.
“We’re going to push this search and look for people who have experience, who understand this campus, this place and this city,” he said. “Taking on these roles will be important for the stability of this campus.”
Whoever the next president may be, Tadlock assured them that they will have the university’s full support.
“The support of a president rests with the people in the community, the board of trustees, vice presidents, and leadership teams. The position of president, in my opinion, is not an island in itself, ”said Tadlock. “The president works with a number of voters. All administrators they work with have a responsibility to make the President succeed. Nobody can do this job alone. “
Tadlock attempted to allay fears during Thursday’s forum and reassure faculty and staff that the future of the St. Petersburg campus remains bright.
“I know that the departure of a president who has taken a different direction in his life and career brings a lot of uncertainty. These things happen, ”said Tadlock. “What is important here is what I tried to say earlier. Don’t come down, don’t go into the ditch. Stay above it.
“USF is great. It is an all-acclaimed nationwide emerging university, ”said Tadlock. “Consolidation is in the works … We will continue to work towards this model that we all want to see and that makes this the place we want to stay and be.”
