"This is a godsend" - How the University of North Georgia renovations are preparing it for the future

The building for film and digital media has three sound stages, three changing rooms, an author’s room, two theater rooms – one with 60 seats – a make-up room, a computer laboratory and more.

“You just can’t use the word transformative enough,” said Oates.

A big part of this transformation has to do with providing spaces that students can stay in on campus even when they’re not in class.

“I always describe this campus as the most residential campus I’ve ever been to because they (the students) hang out,” Oates said. “They longed for rooms where they could just sit in the buildings between lessons … and that’s how they are here and committed.”

The renovation work will also allow the campus to accommodate more students. The UNG predicts that enrollment will rise dramatically to nearly 23,000 students by 2025, with the Gainesville campus leading the way. The Gainesville campus currently has 7,500 students,

“The University of North Georgia is a very popular institution,” said Jacobs. “We are on a growth course. It’s stalled a little from the pandemic, but much less so than most institutions. So we’re faced with the faculties sharing offices when they need private time with the students and don’t have enough classroom space to fully accommodate that. We have to do it, and that’s a godsend. “
