The search for a man who went missing in St. Mark’s Square during the Camino de Santiago is underway

Wildlife and law enforcement officers continue their search in St. Marks for a missing Crawfordville boater who has not been seen since Thursday afternoon.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office are looking for 45-year-old Chris Butler. He was missing during a bow ride near St. Marks Lighthouse.

Cousin Lisa Burns said officers had been searching by boat and air since late Thursday. That was when Butler and an unnamed woman turned east of the lighthouse.

Her anchor was loosened during a storm and when the boat drifted away, the woman was able to swim ashore. Her boat was recovered and the search for Butler was almost uninterrupted on Friday.

The woman “said it showed up very quickly and they tried to get back to the boat,” said Burns. “She couldn’t see him because of the waves, so she swam to the trees.”

Burns hopes searches, coupled with an increase in the number of people on the water this weekend, will help locate butlers.

“It was a challenge, but the support we have received from the FWC and the Wakulla Sheriff’s Office, as well as family and friends, has been overwhelming,” she said. “We were treated wonderfully for the situation we went through.”
