National Men’s Sportsman of the Year

Conner Mantz, who is from Smithfield, Utah, went to the top. The standout BYU defended his singles title at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships – and crowned an unbeaten season – when he crossed the 10 km course in Apalachee Regional Park in a course record of 28: 33.1. It was an incredibly consistent run for Mantz in Tallahassee, Florida as he covered the first 5km in 14: 16.4 and the second 5km in 14: 16.7. At the start of the season, Mantz took first place at three other notable meetings, including the Mountain Region Championships, the West Coast Conference Championships and the FSU Invite / Pre-National Invitational.

The Lance Harter Award
National Women’s Athlete of the Year

Whittni Orton, a native of Panguitch, Utah, was undeniable. The BYU star won the individual title at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in 19: 25.4, almost four seconds faster than defending champion Mercy Chelangat from Alabama. Orton was one of nine women to take the lead within a second of the 5K split on the Apalachee Regional Park course in Tallahassee, Florida, but drove to victory in 3: 00.6 over the final 1km. While Orton has only started three times this season, she has definitely counted each of them: Orton finished the season unbeaten with first places in both the FSU XC Open and the West Coast Conference Championships.

The Bill Dellinger Prize
National coach of the year for men

Michael Smith, in his fifth year as head coach in Northern Arizona, led the Lumberjacks in a dominant effort to the team title at the 2021 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. The entire NAU lineup earned All-America honors as Abdihamid Nur (seventh ), Nico Young (11th), Drew Bosley (13th), George Kusche (37th) and Brodey Hasty (39th) all finished in the top 40. It turned out to be a 45 point win for the Lumberjacks in Tallahassee, Florida. At the start of the season, the NAU took second place at the Mountain Region Championships and topped the podium at three different notable meetings (Big Sky Championships, FSU Invite / Pre-National Invitational and the Cowboy Jamboree).

The Peter for Price
National coach of the year

Laurie Henes led the Wolfpack in her 16th year as head coach at NC State to the team title at the 2021 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida. All five scoring NC State athletes received All America Awards, including Kelsey Chmiel (sixth), Katelyn Tuohy (15th), Alexandra Hays (22nd), Hannah Steelman (24th) and Samantha Bush (32nd) among the Top 40 individuals landed at Apalachee Regional Park. The Wolfpack scored 84 points to win with 42 points. At the beginning of the season, NC State was also at the highest level at the Southeast Region Championships, the ACC Championships and the Joe Piane Invitational.
