The SMU is hiring Rhett Lashlee, Miami offensive coordinator, as its next coach, sources told ESPN. An agreement has been concluded.
Lashlee will replace Sonny Dykes, who is leaving the TCU, according to sources. The TCU has scheduled a press conference for Tuesday to introduce Dykes, who was 30-18 years old in four seasons at SMU.
Lashlee, 38, spent 2018 and 2019 as the SMU’s offensive coordinator under Dykes before moving to Miami for the same role under coach Manny Diaz.
At SMU, he worked with quarterback Ben Hicks, the team’s all-time-passing leader, then oversaw the nation’s number 7 scoring offensive in 2019, when SMU won 10 games for the first time since 1984 and set a team record with 35 rushing set up landings.
With Dykes quickly emerging as the lead candidate for Gary Patterson at TCU, Lashlee became the favorite to replace Dykes at SMU.
Lashlee played quarterback for Arkansas and immediately went into coaching, where he became a protégé of Gus Malzahn and later worked under Malzahn at both Arkansas State and Auburn. Lashlee served as Auburn’s offensive coordinator from 2013 to 2016.
