Deputy helps soccer fans up the stairs of Doak Stadium

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) – Reserve Deputy Chris Hall of the Leon County Sheriff’s Office helps a young soccer fan named Stella play the Florida State University soccer game against Miami.

“She just couldn’t take the next step so I asked again if she could carry me, so she asked her if you would let him carry you, and she just reached out her hand to me so I picked her up and off we went, “said Hall.

Stella, who has a little difficulty walking, was carried up 29 rows of seats after Deputy Hall realized she was having a hard time.

Earlier this year it would have been difficult for Deputy Hall to climb any kind of staircase either.

“I was diagnosed with throat cancer in January,” Hall said.

Deputy Hall was barely able to walk in early 2021 when he was diagnosed with cancer.

“Probably the hardest part is getting help from people because I’ve always been the kind of guy who does everything,” said Sherry Hall.

While Deputy Hall at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare was fighting for his life, receiving two surgeries and 34 radiotherapy treatments, his wife, Sherry, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May.

Deputy Hall’s full time job when not serving and protecting the people of Leon County is helping as a radiation therapist treating cancer patients at TMH. Sherry works in the same hospital and treats patients as a nurse in the intensive care unit. Both have seen the devastating impact cancer can have on a person.

“When you’re a nurse, and an intensive care nurse in particular, you see the worst of the worst,” said Sherry. “And when you have an operation, all kinds of thoughts go through your head.”

For Sherry, it’s remarkable how far her husband has come in the fight against cancer since January.

“Thankful, blessed,” said Sherry. “All glory be to God. How literally.”

But for Deputy Hall, helping Stella up a flight of stairs was only part of the job.

“That’s how we should be as civil servants,” Hall said. “I mean, we’re here to help. Full service agency. And it’s in my heart. I just love helping people.”
