FORT MYERS, Florida – The international border is now open for business again as countries continue to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic.
If travelers want to get away, southwest Florida is sure to be a hotspot destination.
They have been described as “quick” and “angry”. Especially in the last week or so as more and more people are looking for warmer temperatures and sunshine.
I spoke to Jacki Liszak, the President and CEO of the Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce, and she said she thinks this season is going to be huge for travelers. Liszak says that after a strong summer, southwest Florida is also experiencing a strong fall.
Much of this has to do with increased demand due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Many want to make up for lost travel time and that goes far beyond our Canadian neighbors. Liszak says hotels, resorts, and campsites are seeing bookings from those with connections to the northeast as well as the west. It has the recipe, she says, for an extended holiday season.
“We usually assume that our January, February, March and April months are really strong, and I think we’re seeing this wave earlier than usual,” said Liszak.
Some of these newcomers also stay. Liszak went on to say that these bookings from the west seem to be a more recent trend, from people in California to be precise. She says that it’s not just people who come here, they also move here.
Liszak says she thinks there is a possibility that we might see a season stronger than ever.
She said companies reported better numbers for 2021 than 2019, suggesting that people are clearly traveling again.
