Rays has a contract with veteran pitcher Corey Kluber

NS. PETERSBURG – The Rays added the seasoned regular mug they were looking for and agreed on a $ 8 million one-year deal with two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber.

The pending physical exam deal could be worth up to $ 13 million if the 35-year-old club stays healthy and lays up all season.

The Rays made a run at Kluber last off-season that eventually signed with the Yankees for $ 11 million. He made 16 starts for New York and finished the season 5-3, a total of 3.38, but fell out with a strain on his right shoulder from late May to late August.

Kluber started last season 4-3 with a 3.04 ERA in 10 starts, including a no-hitter against Texas on May 19. He went on the injured list after holding out just three innings on his next start, then returned on Aug. 30, walking 1-0, 5.40 in six starts and was considered healthy by the end of the season.

Kluber, a product of Stetson University in DeLand, won the Cy Youngs in 2014 and ’17 with Cleveland, and came third in 2016 and ’18. He missed most of 2019 (with Cleveland) after breaking his arm on a line drive and 2020 (with Texas) due to shoulder problems. He has a career record of 103-61, 3.19 in 225 games over portions of 11 seasons.
