Under the First Offenders Act, Lopez will be exempt from charge if he meets the terms of his sentence.
The Hall County Sheriff’s Office said investigators believe Lopez lost control of his car on Thompson Bridge Road on June 7, 2020. The car crashed from the curb heading north and hit several trees, according to the sheriff’s office.
Grechelle Enid Cuevas Lopez, 20, of Gainesville, died in the wreck.
The indictment charged Lopez with a double first-degree homicide, with one charge of drinking under the influence and the other of reckless driving.
According to the terms of his sentence, Lopez is required to attend five bodies administered by Mothers Against Trunk Driving. According to the non-profit organization, the victims’ impact panels are intended to “help drunk and drugged drivers to recognize and internalize the permanent and long-term effects of substance-impaired driving”.
Lopez will also have to work full-time after being fired, take defensive driving lessons and hand in his driver’s license, according to Fuller’s ruling.
Defense attorney Matt Leipold said the DUI could not come under the First Offender Act, so Lopez was convicted on those charges.
Leipold did not comment on the case beyond confirming the details of the judgment.
