Locals in the city pass it on to those in need

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (WTXL) – Thanksgiving is the time we spend with our loved ones and reflect on how blessed we are.

For some, it’s about finding their next meal.

Shopping for groceries for your family’s traditional dinner is usually a highlight during Thanksgiving.

With the pandemic affecting so many lives, the holidays just aren’t the same and families can no longer gather together like they did before.

“Because of COVID-19, a lot of people couldn’t do that. I couldn’t get together, so I figured why not do something to bring people together, even if it’s just the people in their household, and help them eat together. “

Lanekia Bennett is a local hero who wanted to make a difference. She created the big Thanksgiving giveaway.

“Sometimes it’s a small gesture for someone that can have a huge impact on their life.”

Bennett selected five families and gave them Publix gift cards to make shopping easier.

Candace Battaglia is one of the winners this year.

“At first I thought it was a scam. I wait like someone is calling to tell me they’re going to help you know.

Battaglia has a large family on a single income and has had to make difficult choices.

That year she never thought that a stranger could have such an impact on her life.

“Normally now, during the holidays, we have to think about whether we have to pay a bill or whether we have a big Christmas dinner. It’s kind of that you have to choose one of them. “

“I can buy my vacation food and other groceries for my children and don’t have to pay a bill. I don’t have to worry about that. My bills are paid and we have food on the table. “

Sometimes it just takes one person with a big heart to make a difference.

With so many in need, Marshay’s Catering has been a staple of the community for the past three years, distributing free Thanksgiving meals to the people of Frenchtown.

“It warms my heart because when we get out early tomorrow they’ll be waiting for us.”

Maurice Mccloud is the owner of Marshay’s Catering.

Even though he has volunteers, he still cooks every meal himself.

He told me that he is passionate about giving back.

“That’s what I love to do and to know that I can bless others and feed others who are less fortunate, it’s a wonderful feeling.”

Marshay’s Catering is preparing 200 meals on Bainbridge and Macomb Streets in Frenchtown starting at 11:00 AM on Thursday.
