Small Brewery Sunday 2021: Where to Have a Pint in Tampa

Patch News

TAMPA, FL – Need some suggestion on how to relax after a Thanksgiving weekend of hours of cooking, piles of dirty dishes, endless lines at retail stores, long drives home, and thousands of “are we still there”?

Head to the bar, of course – or more specifically, a craft brewery or two in the Tampa area.

This Thanksgiving weekend ends with the third annual Small Brewery Sunday on November 28th. Organized by the Brewers Association, a non-profit group that works with small and independent American craft brewers, the goal of the unofficial holiday is to encourage Americans to patronize and support local breweries.

Properly, to bring the character and feel of an old English pub to Tampa with a four-barrel brewing system, the father-son team Derek and Ricky Wells founded the Wild Rover Brewing Company, 13921 Lynmar Blvd., Tampa.Photos courtesy of Cigar City Brewing and Angry Chair Brewing
Cigar City Brewing, maker of Jai Alai and Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout, was founded by Joey Redner in 2009 with the aim of creating quality beers that reflect the tastes and history of the Tampa area. The brewery quickly grew from 1,000 kegs of beer in 2009 to over 65,000 kegs in 2016. If you don’t see your favorite brewery on the list, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t support them on Small Brewery Sunday. These are just the breweries that are in Directory of breweries.

Interestingly, more than two-thirds of Americans who have reached the legal drinking age live within 10 miles of a craft brewery, according to the Brewers Association. This fact underscores the importance of Small Brewery Sunday.

The coronavirus pandemic hit small breweries hard in 2020. Overall, craft beer sales in the US fell 9 percent in 2020. According to statistics from the Brewers Association, the amount of beer produced also fell by more than 9 percent.

Meanwhile, most brewery owners were also forced to consider local health restrictions, supply chain issues, and changes in the way customers searched for their products.

As craft beer sales return to pre-pandemic levels by volume, helping independent brewers is still vital, according to the Brewers Association.

“Small and independent breweries have proven to be incredibly resilient and have viewed the recent difficulties as an opportunity for innovation. Faced with new challenges, they have pioneered ways to transform their business models to continue serving their local communities and loyal customers. ”Bob Das Pease, President and CEO of the Brewers Association, said in a press release. “With on-site visits returning and new breweries continuing to open, we are confident that the craft brewing industry will recover and grow in the future.”
