COVID-19 cases in Southwest Florida are on the rise

COVID-19 cases in Southwest Florida are on the rise

FORT MYERS, Florida – Hospitals have seen a decline in serious COVID-19 cases for months. Now the numbers are rising again in southwest Florida with no sign of slowing.

The number of Lee Health hospitals increased this summer. A month ago there were an average of 30 COVID cases in all of their hospitals. Today they have 66 patients, up from 74 cases on Monday.

This time the patients are younger and some are just children. Doctors say most patients are unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated.

“We see children being admitted, we see middle-aged young adults, that’s the whole spectrum,” said Dr. Stephanie Stovall. “It’s just that we don’t see nearly as many people over 65 compared to earlier in the process.”

Lee Health hospital officials say they are concerned about the Delta variant, which is rapidly spreading across the country.

“Ideally, everyone goes out and gets vaccinated and then we protect everyone who is not eligible,” says Stovall. “If you can’t do that, it is best to mask yourself when you are with other people who have not been vaccinated.”

So far, all three vaccines hold up against the Delta variant. Doctors urge people to get a full vaccination if they haven’t already
