FARGO, ND – A couple of North Dakota State University seniors joined the Major League Baseball organizations on Tuesday, July 13th. Shortstop Bennett Hostetler was named an undrafted free agent by the Miami Marlins in the 18th of the Kansas City Royals organization.

Hostetler (Bozeman, Mont.) Was drafted 539th overall by Miami, making him the first bison to be selected in the MLB draft since Juan Gamez in 2016. He was named Summit League Player of the Year in 2021, hitting 0.394 in 61 games with a 0.513 on-base percentage, 84 hits, and 10 home runs. Hostetler was chosen for the shortstop selection in the NCAA Stanford Regional All-Tournament Team and was appointed to the second team of the ABCA / Rawlings All-Central Region.

Hostetler holds the NDSU career records for games played (225), starts (220), walks (108) and hit times (49). He ranks second in school history for assists, third for career hits and runs, and fourth for runs that were hit and overall bases.

Harm (Mandan, ND) signed with the Royals according to the shortened, 20-round draft. He was named to the third ABCA / Rawlings All-America team that year, making him the first NDSU NCAA Division I-era baseball player to receive All-American awards. Harm earned the honor of being the first team in the All-Summit League as a relief pitcher and appeared in 22 games from the bullpen with 12 parades this season.

Harm recorded 62 strikeouts in 37 innings as a senior in 2021, finishing with an ERA of 1.70. He holds the NDSU career record with 10.58 strikeouts per nine innings, and his 15 career savings are the second highest in program history.

Hostetler is the fourth NDSU draft pick since 2013, alongside John Straka (2013), Jay Flaa (2015) and Juan Gamez (2016). Flaa made his MLB debut for the Baltimore Orioles in April of that season and then appeared in an MLB game for the Atlanta Braves in May.
