Florida State University is preparing for thousands to return to campus

TALLAHASSEE – Florida State University will have more students than ever before in the history of the school.

FSU expects up to 7,000 new freshmen and an additional 7,000 returning students this fall who weren’t on campus last year because of the pandemic.

“There is adrenaline for everyone to get back together, and with that adrenaline anything can happen,” said Nastassia Janvier, president of the FSU student body.

At a forum, PhD students, university and community leaders outlined what a full return to campus will look like. Masks are recommended on the doors.

All 6,700 dorms are full. Students must be cleared to move in, either by showing that they have been vaccinated or by being tested.

“Anyone who is COVID positive needs to isolate themselves from campus,” said Shannon Staten, general manager of university housing.

Students are encouraged to distance themselves in nature and have as much outdoor activity as possible.

Bar owners in a nearby college town are predicting a big year.

“Could be one of our biggest quarters three and four yet,” said Jason Burroughs, owner of Tallahassee Township.

The student government is starting a program they call “Angel Drink”

“For example, you would say star fruit and order star fruit, and this would expressly signal to the servers that I need help, I need help,” said Janvier.

Major Justin Maloy, FSU deputy chief of police, said the officers’ focus will not be on drinking for minors.

“We’re focusing on the bigger picture of crime in our community,” Maloy said.

The big picture is being aware of yourself in a new environment, keeping your head off phones when crossing the street, and protecting personal property.

Tallahassee and surrounding Leon County rank sixth in the state for crime per capita in 2020. First-time college students are often unsuspecting targets.
