The Miami HEAT has partnered with Florida Blue, Mindful Kids Miami, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools to create a Mindfulness Champions Initiative to remove the stigma surrounding mental health and address the needs of students and teachers who return to school after an extended period of isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the Mindfulness Champions Initiative, Mindful Kids Miami has trained a Mindfulness Champion in mindfulness and mental health education at each of Miami’s 354 K-12 public schools in Miami-Dade County.
In addition, NBA partner Headspace made a free subscription to Headspace available to all teachers and administrators at the Miami-Dade County Public School, which provides a library of mental health resources including mindfulness content for stress, anxiety, sleep, focus, fitness, and more more. This gesture is part of the Headspace for Educators program, which is helping K-12 teachers, school administrators, and support workers across America reduce stress, build resilience, and be more mindful.
To highlight the need for an engaging discussion about mental health in our community, the Adrienne Arsht Center for Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County also unveiled its new arts education program, The Ninth. The Ninth is an innovative theater production combining performing arts with mental health awareness and education that will tour all Miami-Dade County’s public high schools for the upcoming school year, affecting 25,000 ninth grade students. In addition to free performances, the program also includes an accompanying study guide and all-round services that incorporate teaching artist visits to the wellness clubs of Miami-Dade County’s public schools.
