Skulls found at Lake Jackson that were found to be of Native American descent

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The two human skulls discovered at Lake Jackson in early June have been determined to be of Native American descent, the Florida State Department confirmed to WCTV Friday.

On June 23, it was found that the skulls were an “archaeological find and of historical origin”.

The skulls were then assessed by the State Archaeologist and found to be from Native American ancestors dating back to 1400-1600 and originally from the midwestern United States, according to the FDS.

Pursuant to Section 872.05 of the Florida Bylaws, the state will have jurisdiction over the remains and subject to federal Native American Protection and Repatriation Act to determine the final disposition.
