The countdown to the 2021 Florida State Football season is on.
The Seminoles go into the coming season with many questions, Mike Norvells second at the head of the program.
During a season shortened by a pandemic that limited the Seminoles to nine games in 2020, the FSU finished with a 3-6 record. It was the program’s worst record since FSU 3-8 in 1975, a year before Bobby Bowden arrived in Tallahassee.
Norvell and his staff inherited a roster that was the youngest in college football in terms of sub-student percentage at the end of the season. To counteract this, the Seminoles hit the transfer portal hard this off-season and brought 10 FBS transfers with plenty of experience.
Norvell is kicking off a critical second season off the program that emerged from a much more regular off-season and will seek to lead FSU to its first winning record since 2017.
Here’s a countdown look at the list of Democrats’ top 40 FSU players for the upcoming season, compiled by Beat writers Curt Weiler and Andre Fernandez that ends in # 1 today.
Redshirt Senior Defensive End Jermaine Johnson II
It only fits that the countdown ends with another transfer extension made by the Seminoles this off-season.
While quarterback McKenzie Milton is believed to be the most effective takeover of the FSU on offense, Johnson could have a huge say in the leap the Seminoles defense makes this season.
And that could ultimately determine the outcome of several potential close games on the FSU’s schedule.

Johnson comes from SEC powerhouse Georgia, where he appeared in 21 games and made four starts, playing mostly as a third-down specialist for the Bulldogs for the past two seasons. During that time, Johnson completed 36 tackles, including eight for 7.5 sack loss and 24 quarterback pressures. His five sacks last season were third among Georgia defenders.
At FSU, Johnson will take on a much bigger role on Pass Rush and Run Defense, where Norvell stated at the ACC kickoff last week that he hopes Johnson can make positive progress too. The FSU defense desperately needs more pass rushers after collecting just 10 sacks in nine games last season.
Johnson could be the highly disruptive presence to opposing quarterbacks that the FSU lacked last season, and even more so when you combine him with a few extra transfer rushers that the Seminoles like Keir Thomas, South Carolina and Marcus Cushnie, Alabama A&M). .
Johnson, a consensus among the top three JUCO prospectuses ahead of Georgia, recorded 12.5 sacks in 20 games at Independence Community College, a school featured in the third season of the Netflix series “Last Chance U,” four forced fumbles and four fumble restores. ‘
Norvell relies heavily on Johnson talent for years to come for on-field production and off-field leadership.
