Southwest Florida will send three boys’ golf teams to each of the national tournaments in the coming weeks.
Bishop Verot and Gulf Coast won Class 1A and 3A Regionals respectively on Monday, and Naples High qualified by finishing second at the 2A-4 Regional in Miami.
Gulf Coast Chris Forsythe shared first place in the 3A-2 Regional at Lakewood Ranch and Bishop Verot Junior Dalton Payne shared second place in the 1A-2 Regional at Stoneybrook Golf Club in Estero. Naples Senior Sam Kodak, a Florida club, led the Golden Eagles, finishing fourth.
Four overall teams and four individual players for each of the three state tournaments are selected using data in the iWanamaker system used by the FHSAA, using the results of district and regional tournaments.
The state tournament of class 1A takes place from November 9th to 10th, followed by the 2A tournament from November 12th to 13th and the 3A tournament from November 16th to 17th. All three are located at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills.
Bishop Verot boys win the class 1A region 2 tournament
Payne had fought for most of the season, including shooting an 81 in the same court for just a few weeks in the Private 8 tournament.
But he was 3 under to play with eight, then he made five straight pars in front of a bogey at # 16. He recovered to close with two pars to defeat Saint Stephens’ Alex Long in second place, one behind Beni Long, also from Saint Stephens.
“It doesn’t matter,” Payne said. “We won, that’s the most important thing.”
“It’s great for him, for his confidence,” said Verot coach Andy Scott. “I knew that would happen for him. It’s just a matter of when. It’s good that it happens in the postseason.”
Teammate Michael Bevins finished fourth with a 71, followed by Kevin Kelly with a 75 in 12th place and Zachary Loninger with a 77 in 17th place. District medalist Christian Allen finished fifth for the Vikings on a 78, finishing in 20th place.

It took Verot all of those top 4s to win, knocking out Saint Stephens for the team title with a 293. Cardinal Mooney shot a 298 to grab the third and final qualifying spot for the state tournament.
“I’ve never been so nervous in my life,” said Scott. “To see this live scoring is great, but it stresses you like crazy. We liked some things a bit. We didn’t do very well, but we always had two players who played well under par today, always good.” to see that from your team. “
“It feels great,” said Payne. “I have a feeling that we have a family here with the team.”
Community School finished fourth with a 312, and Southwest Florida Christian joined ninth with 351. Jordan Law led the Seahawks with a 73 and lost a scorecard playoff for the third and final individual qualifying place. Hunter McDaniel led the King’s at 83.
Verot didn’t make it last year after Kelly couldn’t play due to a foot injury.
“I think we didn’t make it last year really made us realize that we have to play well and if it plays well it will feel great going to the States,” said Payne.

Gulf Coast Boys win Class 3A Region 2 tournament
Forsythe, a First Baptist Transfer, shot a 76 in the CCAC tournament and an 81 in the district.
But he put together a 1-over 73 to vote with Justin Zullin of Sarasota-Riverview for the medalist honors.
Forsythe was there with three holes to go and needed a little help from Gulf Coast trainer Kim Benedict.
“I got really nervous when I kicked off in 16th place,” he said. “I told her you had to go with me about this hole. It really started to hit me. She went with me. She helped me calm down, told me to take a deep breath and walk slowly. “
Forsythe screwed No. 17 with a birdie against Zullin, who parried the last four holes.
“I think it was certainly big for us, but I think it was really important for his confidence,” said Benedict. “It was fantastic to be able to do it under a little pressure.”
Forsythe was followed directly behind by Ryan Miller and newcomer Dax Greenwood, who finished third with 74 seconds. CCAC and district medalist Noah Kent fought at 81.
“Dax, it’s so good to have a newcomer to the Regionals and to say that this is our season here and that he shoots 74 is really huge,” said Benedict.
“We are very happy to win Regionals, we definitely had a good competition today. The course was very difficult and I think we mastered it great. We are really looking forward to this one, but we are probably even more looking forward to it to know that we have punched our ticket for the national tournament and will continue our season. “

The boys from Naples finish second in the Class 2A Region 4 tournament
Naples High School golf team goes back to the state.
The Golden Eagles had to take a different route this year after the FHSAA redefined their region and brought Southwest Florida and South Florida into the same region rather than schools north of Southwest Florida along the state’s west coast.
Napoli made it anyway, shooting a 310 with five strokes to second place behind the Power Plantation-American Heritage. Estero finished seventh with a 331 and Barron Collier finished eighth with a 336.
“It’s a very proud moment,” said Naples coach Kip Wilson. “We left this morning at 5:30 am. We got there around 7:30 am and 8:20 am to tee off. We finished at 2:30 am, got in the van and came back. You really, really did well played.
“It was windy. They had never played the course before. I couldn’t be more proud of the way they played.”
Kodak had four birdies and five bogeys in their 1-over 73, which was good for fourth place. Luke Clanton, who has also signed up for the state of Florida, picked up 71 medalists.
Naples High teammate Oliver Marshall tied for sixth on a 76 and Kody Horton of the Golden Eagles tied for ninth on a 78. Willem Jaron shot an 83 and Tom Kodak had an 88.
“We knew we were good enough, but we didn’t know what to expect,” said Sam Kodak. “We all played very well. We could only get out with five defeats. We wanted to do that.”
“Kody played well,” said Wilson.
Sophomore JD Dintino led Estero, leveling Marshall with a 76. Newcomer Braden Miller surpassed Barron Collier to finish eighth with a 77. Both Dintino and Miller moved up to the top three not on a qualified team.
“Barron Collier and Estero did a really great job too,” said Wilson. “I was very proud that our team came over there and stayed with them.”
North Fort Myers was ninth with a 342 led by Duncan Fischers 79, and Mariner was 12th with a 498.
