Florida State responds well to Clemson loss ahead of the final spurt

Florida State responds well to Clemson loss ahead of the final spurt

For the first time in over a month, the Florida State football team trained after losing on Sunday night.

The Seminoles (3-4, 2-3 in ACC), who opened their season with four straight losses, saw their streak of three games on Saturday with a 30-20 loss at Clemson.

It was a feeling that they hadn’t felt in over four weeks and that the FSU can’t afford, as they need three wins in the last four games to get six wins. It starts on Saturday at 4 p.m. when FSU organizes No. 22 NC State (6-2, 3-1).

Norvell said at his weekly press conference on Monday afternoon that he was encouraged by the effort his team put into training on Sunday – usually focusing on players who played minimally the day before.

“I appreciated the way our team went in and out of the weight room yesterday and how they worked in the briefing rooms and how we attacked the practice field,” said Norvell.

The moments that turned the tide:Three breakthrough moments in Florida State Football’s loss to Clemson

“(Sunday) night, even after the game, we talked about the development practice we do for some of the younger guys to get that extra job. There were people playing some meaningful snaps there on Saturday. It was that best energy and the best competition we had all year round. For me these are steps. This culture was built up and developed further there. These guys get the opportunity to compete, yes, we go. “

FSU coach Mike Norvell saw a great response to Saturday's loss to Clemson at the Seminoles' Sunday film study and practice sessions.

Norvell reached out to his team after losing Clemson, channeling a message sent to him by long-time FSU defense coordinator Mickey Andrews shortly after arriving in Tallahassee.

“One of my first months here, we’re doing our Tour of Duty (out-of-season workouts). Coach Andrews came out. And while we were doing the exercises, he came up to me. (It was a) Exercise where we were standing up emphasize whether it’s a sit-up roll or a belly flop. Coach Andrews says, “It’s not a sin to get knocked down. Your bum just better get up before you hit the floor, “said Norvell.

“I think that’s incredible wisdom on how to do things. Our team, it was a challenging first month, but we got up. We responded. We pushed forward. There were four weeks of positive momentum, lots of things that we are growing and building on.

“Of course we got knocked down again on Saturday. The only sin is if you stay on this ground. We’ll jump up and go forward and we’ll attack every day as we can to get and be better,” the team, too that we are capable of. That is the mindset. That is the approach. “

When the FSU faced adversity earlier this season after a home opener defeat to Notre Dame in overtime, they didn’t get up straight away, as Andrews puts it.

Six days after that Sunday defeat, the Seminoles lost their first-ever game of the program against an FCS program at home against Jacksonville State.

This was followed by an uncompetitive loss at Wake Forest and a 31-7 deficit in the first half to Louisville the following week. The rally of the Seminoles against the Cardinals in the second half now looks like the beginning of the turnaround of the FSU.

However, looking back, Norvell sees some potential indicators of ongoing problems from the Notre Dame game that may have been dragged into the battles of the following weeks.

“That was a situation that we played on a Sunday evening, came back with a short week, had to start up again after an emotional game. Very similar. Lots of similarities. But also during this week the intensity, all these little” things, on what I pay attention to when preparing, I pointed it out, challenged it and obviously it showed in our game next Saturday, “said Norvell.

“From then on, we had the opportunity to grow from it. I think we have. A prime example was taking to the streets and beating North Carolina. We did it a great way. “

Norvell is confident that the continued growth in the development of its culture, as seen in the meeting rooms and on the practice field on Sunday evening, will continue this week.

FSU's loss at Clemson Saturday broke off their three-game winning streak that followed their four-game loss to start the season.

While FSU is not favored in many, if any, or its remaining games – at home against NC State and Miami, and then on the street against Boston College and Florida – all seem more profitable than they were a few weeks ago for various reasons.

Incredibly, a shell berth for the FSU is not entirely ruled out. But it has to respond to its first loss in over a month with another winning streak to make it happen.

“You see the positives, you also need to build on the positives that we’ve shown and that we’re capable of,” said Norvell.

“This team will keep fighting, they will keep getting better, they will keep reacting.”
