In five consecutive evaluation cycles, the Capital Regional Medical Center received an “A” grade in the Leapfrog Hospital Ratings for Fall 2021, while Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare dropped from “C” to “D”.
Both hospitals are among the more than 2,500 healthcare facilities in the United States surveyed for Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital safety report, published each spring and fall.
Leapfrog collects data from public documents and hospital-submitted materials and ranks each facility from “A” to “F” based on responses to prevent errors, injuries, accidents, infections, and other criteria. According to its website, the rating system is also assessed by experts.
Read previous rankings:
“Receiving our fifth consecutive Leapfrog Grade ‘A’ for providing safe patient care is an exceptional achievement, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dr. Trey Blake, Chief Medical Officer at CRMC, on the ranking created in 2000 by the non-profit Leapfrog Group.
“One thing about this award – it’s for the people who do all the hard work behind the scenes. That ‘A’ is a standing ovation for her. No matter how often we earn this honor, it is always something very special. “
Tallahassee Memorial official says the dates can be up to 4 years old
On the flip side, TMH, who first participated in the survey in 2019, said the data may be up to four years old and “may not reflect the reality of (TMH) performance today”.
“The reality at TMH just doesn’t match a bad grade,” said Dr. Jana Iezzi-Tumblin, Vice President and Chief Improvement Officer at TMH. “A better example is to look back at our last two years – a massive response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a new Joint Commission and American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons certification for joint replacement.”
Iezzi-Tumblin added that due to a lag time, these improvements are not immediately reflected in the publicly reported rating.
In addition, TMH, which dropped from a “C” in April, scored 73 on the Leapfrog Ranking for Value Buying, which is above the national average of 67 “and shows steady progress for the organization,” said Iezzi Called tumblin.
TMH often touts its placement as one of the top Florida hospitals by the US News & World Report – a ranking that CRMC does not list.
