After a month-long surge fueled by the Delta variant, new cases of COVID-19 are falling again every day in the United States. To date, 45,548,975 Americans have contracted the virus – and 738,015 have died from it. On a per capita basis, the US has one of the highest known infection rates in the world.
In Tampa St. A total of 487,238 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the greater Petersburg-Clearwater area of Florida to date. Adjusted for the population, there were 16,080 reported infections per 100,000 people in the region – above the national rate of 13,922 cases per 100,000 people.
Although the per capita cases of COVID-19 in Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater than nationwide, some parts of the metro area are safer than others.
The wider Tampa area has four counties or county equivalents – and of these, Pinellas County, Florida has the fewest per capita COVID-19 cases. So far there have been a total of 136,396 infections or 14,239 per 100,000 population in Pinellas County.
Although Pinellas County has the lowest per capita infection rate in the greater Tampa area, the per capita mortality rate is close to the regional average.
There were a total of 281 coronavirus-related deaths per 100,000 people in Pinellas County, compared to 269 COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 across Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater subway area.
