Extradition issues remain, as the sought-after European pop star is hiding in Cape Coral

CAPE CORAL, Florida – From hits to hiding places, a European pop star who once topped the charts is now top of the most wanted list.

Michael Wendler, who owns six gold records, is now being sought by the federal government. He’s hiding in southwest Florida.

After the federal government issued an arrest warrant against Wendler, German media inspected Wendler’s house this week. It could be difficult to get hold of as he is hiding in his Cape Coral home.

The reporter from Germany who is looking for him said people in her home country wanted to know whether he was planning to return alone to face a judge or whether the US would send him back.

Timo Berger is among the creditors who are looking for him. Berger was on trial on Tuesday when Wendler did not appear.

“Now the German judiciary wants to make an arrest,” said Berger.

Berger visited Wendler’s Cape Coral home in January to collect his debts, but no one came to the door.

“In Germany he still has many creditors and one of his creditors is the German IRS,” explained Berger.

German newspapers report that Wendler has to appear due to a penalty order in connection with his bankruptcy.

Wendler is also being sued by the independent television broadcaster RTL after leaving the German version of American Idol.

While he did not appear in court, he did not open the door when visiting NBC-2 News on Thursday afternoon.

The German reporter who was chasing him knew for sure that he was home.

“Yesterday he mowed the grass and (his wife) Laura was at the pool. She sunbathed and played with the dog. They had delivery people coming in, ”she said.

It is still unclear whether the US government will work with Germany to deliver him back to that country.
