Tampa Bay Buccaneers sign tight end De’Quan Hampton, second on PUP’s training camp lineups

On Saturday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed first-year tight end De’Quan Hampton, who last played for the Los Angeles Wildcats in the now-defunct XFL. The team also put two other players on the list of active / physically incapable of performing (PUP) prior to the start of the training camp. Tight end Cameron Brate and wide receiver Justin Watson joined wide receiver John Franklin and cornerback Chris Wilcox, who were added to that list on Thursday.

Players on the Active / PUP list will continue to count towards the 90 man limit of the camp roster; they can also be activated and returned to the practice at any time. The purpose of adding players to the Active / PUP list prior to the start of camp is to provide the opportunity to add them to the reserve / PUP list at the beginning of the regular season if necessary. Players starting the regular season on the reserve / PUP list can return to the active roster after six weeks.

The Buccaneers had two open spots in their 90-man training camp after they waived Curtis Riley’s safety on Thursday and put Jordan Whitehead’s safety on the reserve / COVID-19 list on Friday. The team’s roster now includes 89 active players, with the first camp training scheduled for Sunday morning.

The 6-4, 225-pound Hampton played wide receiver at USC but was signed as a tight end by the Buccaneers. He played two seasons (2015-16) for the Trojans, recording 22 receptions for 238 yards and two touchdowns. After Hampton was not drafted in 2017, he briefly signed with the Detroit Lions, but later went to training camp with the New Orleans Saints. It was picked up from New Orleans at the end of the preseason.

Hampton gets a second chance in the NFL after playing in both the Alliance of American Football (with the San Diego Fleet) and the XFL. Both leagues quickly collapsed.
