Beloved, fellow officers pay tribute to the Hollywood officer killed while touring Miami Lakes - WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

MIAMI LAKES, FLA. (WSVN) – Family members, friends and police officers from South Florida and across the country came together to pay their respects to a Hollywood police officer who lost his life in the field.

Officer Yandy Chirino was on a tour of the Vista Funeral Home in Miami Lakes on Sunday afternoon.

7 News cameras captured relatives outside the venue and brothers and sisters in blue who were there to support the family of the fallen officer.

“It’s very difficult, OK? It is very difficult because while this is not someone we knew personally, as brothers in law enforcement we are all brothers, ”said Lee Milstein of the Blue Knights of South Florida.

Chirino, who was only 28 years old, was shot dead in Hollywood’s Emerald Hills neighborhood on October 17th.

Investigators said a burglar suspect resisted arrest, opened fire and beat the officer.

Chirino was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Outside the funeral home, current and retired officials pondered the dangers associated with the badge. They said fatal incidents that cost the lives of those who promised to protect and serve are becoming far too common.

“Hopefully we don’t have to do it that often,” said Milstein.

Officials from multiple local law enforcement agencies were on the scene Sunday, including officers from Hialeah, North Miami Beach, Aventura, and West Miami police departments, to name a few.

A group of New York police officers also flew down to assist the Chirino family.

“Even after we’ve all gone and gone home, there is still a support network not just in your own community but across the country,” said NYPD Sgt. John McFarland.

The suspect, charged with the murder of Chirino, was identified as 18-year-old Jason Banegas. He faces a number of charges, including insulting an officer, resisting the arrest, and murder.
