FORT MYERS, Florida – The computers at the Lee County Department of Motor Vehicles have gone down causing long waits and worse, many people are forced to drive with an expired driver’s license.
The failures have resulted in many people unable to renew their registration with the state and their numbers have expired.
Taxpayers entering the Lee County’s tax collector’s office were greeted Wednesday with a sign indicating that the state computer system was experiencing problems. The outages have occurred nationwide since October 29th.
However, this is not the only frustration people face as many are upset that they can no longer simply go to the office to do their business. Instead, they have to make an appointment and can no longer get a registration sticker in the office. This has to be done online or at one of only three kiosk locations in the entire district.
Rick Warren from Fort Myers was unaware of the changes.
“I’m now on a mission to find out which kiosk might work and which one is down. That should take about half a day, ”said Warren.
But kiosks are also affected by the computer failures. Several people said they tried to use one but to no avail.
Kathy Rodey of North Fort Myers said she was frustrated because she couldn’t get a registration sticker at the county office or the kiosk she had to drive miles to in downtown Fort Myers.
Neither the state nor the Noelle Branning District Tax Bureau would say what caused the outage or how long it could last.
“The backup processor is designed to take over if the main processor fails but that routine function did not immediately complete as planned,” said Rose Herbert Florida, Department of Management Services.
