Gainesville School Board approves construction supplies and closes 1 day for COVID boosters

Gainesville School Board approves construction supplies and closes 1 day for COVID boosters

Gainesville Middle School West campus is receiving $ 983,000 for furniture, physical education, and cheerleading equipment purchases with a tentative completion date of April 2022.

The board’s treasurer Sammy Smith said “there may be some supply chain issues and people should understand by now before they complain this spring.”

A total of $ 1.24 million was approved for the Gainesville High School Weightlifting Center. The money will be used to buy weightlifting and exercise equipment and to add a standalone warehouse. Board member Kris Nordholz said the center was “state of the art” when it was built about a decade ago, but needed some modernization.

The district approved plans to install new laminate flooring in a section of the Centennial Arts Academy as a pilot to see if the same should be done in other schools. Many schools currently have vinyl composition tiles that require a lot of maintenance. Chief Operations Officer Adrian Niles said the laminate floor “should cut our costs dramatically” and “will pay for itself in three years”. It’s also stain and scratch resistant, he said.

School day canceled to hold a vaccine booster clinic

School will be canceled on November 19, the Friday before Thanksgiving, giving school staff an opportunity to get their COVID-19 booster shot at Gainesville Middle School. Superintendent Jeremy Williams estimates that 250 or more shots will be administered that day. He noted that about 400 employees received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine during a vaccine event in March.

Buses get new cameras

All bus cameras will be replaced with 13-megapixel “top-of-the-line” cameras at a cost of about $ 40,000, Niles said, adding that 70% of the county’s buses have outdated cameras, both principals and other school officials require to watch videotapes in the store where buses are kept. The new cameras will provide high quality video that can be easily transferred to a computer.
