After a month-long surge fueled by the Delta variant, new cases of COVID-19 are falling again every day in the United States. So far, 45,445,700 cases of the virus have been reported nationwide – and that number is growing every day.
In Tampa St. A total of 485,646 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the greater Petersburg-Clearwater area of Florida to date. Adjusted for the population, there were 16,028 reported infections per 100,000 people in the region – above the national rate of 13,891 cases per 100,000 people.
The above-average per capita COVID-19 infection rate in Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater is primarily driven by a high concentration of the virus in one area.
The greater Tampa area has four counties, or county equivalents, which can include independent cities – and of these, Hillsborough County has the most COVID-19 cases per capita. To date, Hillsborough County has had a total of 241,798 infections, or 17,536 for every 100,000 people.
However, a relatively high rate of infection does not necessarily mean that Hillsborough County’s per capita deaths from COVID-19 are higher than the entire Tampa area. Hillsborough County had a total of 213 coronavirus deaths per 100,000 people, compared to 265 COVID-19 deaths per 100,000 across Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater subway area.
