Leon County COVID cases and deaths continue to decline

The Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare and Capital Regional Medical Center recorded the lowest monthly number of COVID-related deaths since July, according to a protocol recently released by both hospitals.

In October, TMH reported 19 COVID deaths, down from 82, the number for the month of September.

CRMC had three COVID-related deaths in October, according to spokeswoman Rachel Stiles. August was the hospital’s deadliest month with 74 virus-related deaths and September 21 were reported.

As of Monday morning, Tallahassee hospitals were treating 18 patients for the virus: 11 in TMH and seven in CRMC.

Nationwide number of cases

Florida reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week that ended Sunday, adding 12,151 new cases. That’s 16.6% fewer than 14,564 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19 the previous week.

Florida was ranked 49th among the states where the coronavirus spread fastest per person, according to an analysis by the USA TODAY Network of data from Johns Hopkins University. Last week, coronavirus cases in the United States were down 0.3% from the previous week, with 506,884 cases reported. At 6.45% of the country’s population, Florida had 2.4% of the country’s cases in the past week. Across the country, 16 states had more cases in the past week than the week before.

Local breakdown

  • Leon County reported 219 cases in the past week. A week earlier, it had reported 236 cases. 51,612 cases have been reported throughout the pandemic.
  • Gadsden County reported 12 cases in the past week. A week earlier, it had reported 24 cases. 8,648 cases were reported during the pandemic.
  • Wakulla County reported 29 cases in the past week. A week earlier, 27 cases had been reported. 6,418 cases have been reported throughout the pandemic.
  • Jefferson County reported 14 cases in the past week. A week earlier, 12 cases had been reported. 2,496 cases have been reported throughout the pandemic.
  • Franklin County reported four cases in the past week. It had reported four cases a week earlier. 2,266 cases were reported during the pandemic.
  • Jackson County reported 34 cases in the past week. A week earlier, 35 cases had been reported. 10,177 cases were reported during the pandemic.

Florida does not publish direct county-level death data.

Cases decreased in 53 counties across Florida, with the best declines in Hillsborough County with 903 cases from 1,347 a week earlier; in Broward County, with 1,178 cases out of 1,472; and in Orange County with 800 cases out of 1,018.

Vaccinations

Florida ranked 16th among states for the proportion of people who received at least one vaccination, with 69% of its residents being at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 66.5%, according to a US TODAY analysis of the CDC data. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are most commonly used in the United States, require two doses given a few weeks apart.

In the week that ended Friday, Florida reported that an additional 420,262 vaccine doses were administered, including 89,806 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 340,548 vaccine doses, of which 120,232 were first doses. In total, Florida reported that it delivered 28,417,402 total doses.

Most of the total new cases were Miami-Dade County with 1,968 cases; Broward County with 1,178 cases; and Hillsborough County at 903. Weekly case numbers were up in 12 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the previous week’s pace were in the Lee, Lake and St. Johns counties.

In Florida, 867 people were reported dead from COVID-19 in the week to Sunday. In the previous week, 944 people were reported dead.

A total of 3,690,812 people in Florida have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 59,670 people have died from the disease, data from Johns Hopkins University shows. In the United States, 45,970,785 people tested positive and 745,832 people have died.
